Hailed by the CPP, the 7th day of January `1979 is celebrated every year since as a victory day over the Democratic Khmer Rouge regime.

The opposition and the nationalist group protested that and see it as a day Vietnam invaded and started colonizing Cambodia in the guise of liberating the Cambodian people from the rule of the Khmer Rouge.
