Cambodia: Democrcay at Risk

This day July 5th in 1997 14 years ago a battle was started in Phnom Penh between the forces loyal to Prince Ranatrddh and his rival Hun Sen. For the CPP this was a 2 day pre emptive self defense operation, and for the FUNCINPEC it was a coup d'etat. Many dead in Ranariddh side and Hun Sen won, Prince Ranariddh survived for having leaving the country a few days before. His military man Nhek Bunchhay escaped the sure death after a sucessful escape accross the country toward the Northern borders.
Hun Sen installed Ung Huoth as Premier to replace Ranariddh for the few months remaing in the term. This blitz has a very negative impact on democracy. Hun Sen and the CPP was then in ful control of the security forces and could easely influence on the outcomes of future elections. Democracy is surely at risk.
