It was on November 9, 1953, 63 year ago that Cambodia was granted full independence from France after 90 years of occupation under France's protectorate. King Norodom Sihanouk was then claimed the title of Father of Independence for having launch the so called Crusade for Independence years before. The dissidents, former Khmer Issaraks/Vietminh, were not happy because they were fighting for many years against French troops and the King just took the opportunity to take all the credit. With communist Vietnamese forces support they also went to Geneva in 1954 to claim their part, without success.
Cambodia now is run by the CPP that was the remnant of the Khmer People Revolutionary Party, an offspring of the old communist Vietnamese party.
